ICASS on the horizon

In the middle of preparing for presenting a paper on the ASAT project at the Seventh International Congress of Arctic Social Sciences, “Circumpolar Perspectives in Global Dialogue: Social Sciences beyond the International Polar Year,” which will be held in Akureyri, Iceland, from 22-26 June 2011. I’ll be flying from Philly on Sunday and spending a day in Reykjavik. There I’d like to find the copy of the Einar Jonsson statue of the explorer Thorfinn Karlsefni the original of which was placed in Philadelphia in 1920. In Akureyri I’ll be catching up with colleagues many of whom I haven’t seen since before 9/11 when a decade of research was upended. Five mobilizations later, my Coast Guard Reserve career is winding down and I look forward to the 2010s when I can finally return to the Arctic to continue my research into the historical archaeology of sites from the Heroic Era of Exploration.
